Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Since she was the only child, she was raised also through her maternal grandparents. Scott attended her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. Scott studied secondary school education while also working at two different positions. Her dream was to be an English high school teacher. She was unable to fulfill the dream after completing three years of study and working as a teaching assistant in college, she decided to leave. She started her career performing live poems and her own work. Then she joined forces together with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. They were able to collaborate in writing You Got Me. In the Roots performance, she made her debut as an artist. Afterward she secured collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience in performing through the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was the first signing artist on Hidden Beach Recordings. Hidden Beach Recordings label.
